Class Elections

I was so proud of my students, the way in which they handled today's election. We had 4 candidates for Treasurer and 3 candidates for Sergeant-at-Arms. They knew that only one would be declared the winner but they were willing to take on that risk. The had diligently prepared their speeches and practiced them until they were confident, polished and ready to present the case to their peers. In the end only one candidate for each office moves on to the general election to face 4th graders from other classrooms. And it was a very close election, we even had to have a special runoff election for Sergeant-at-Arms.

I hope they all know how proud I am of them and that they are all winners. The quote I shared with the class the other day was, " Man's mind, once stretched by a new idea never regains its original dimensions." - Oliver Wendell Holmes

I believe their reality, their self-perceptions, have been forever altered from today forward. They have allowed themselves to enter a larger world.

So, Iris and Jewels will venture forth to face the next challenge and we wish them well.
