Veterans Day

To honor our country's veterans while at the same time learning about Veterans Day, the students have engaged in several activities. They wrote letters to soldiers who are currently serving in Afghanistan. These letters were given to Mrs. Delyea to deliver to her son who is currently on active duty in Afghanistan. We watched an excellent educational video that offered a good balance between personal narratives and facts, presented by our librarian Ms. Halvorson. Room 205 presented Veterans Day skits to six of the primary classrooms. The feedback I got from the teachers was excellent. Unfortunately due to schedule conflicts we were unable to do the skits with Room 206. Then both rooms also learned about the origins of the red poppy as a symbol for Remembrance Day (one of the original names for Veterans Day), and they made their own red poppy which they adhered to a facsimile of the original poem of "In Flander's Field". We concluded with a patriotic slide show accompanied by the song, "I Pledge Allegiance". I encouraged the students to take a couple of minutes today at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month to remember why we have Veterans Day.

Here is a link I just came across today from The National Geographic ---> Veterans Day
