Human Growth & Development

The 4th grade team will participate in this unit during the week of 10/27-10/31. The instruction will focus on (1) physical and emotional changes that occur during adolescence, (2) identifying parts of the human reproductive system and their functions, (3) good personal hygiene, and (4) self-esteem. As required by state law there will also be instruction on HIV/AIDS. There were opportunities to preview these materials earlier this fall so that you could decide whether or not you wanted your child to take part in the classroom instruction. State law requires parents to preview the HIV/AIDS curriculum before they can exclude their child from instruction.

Goals of Human Growth and Development
  1. Students will be introduced to concepts of positive self-image.
  2. Students will be introduced to individual differences in maturation.
  3. Students will be introduced to vocabulary used in human growth and development.
  4. Fourth grade students will be introduced to their own body parts and their functions.
  5. Students will be introduced to good personal health habits.

Some activities will be conducted co-ed while others will necessitate separation of boys and girls.
